Philippines Hosts First Quantum Information Conference and Unveils First Quantum Computer

The Philippines held its first Quantum Information, Science, and Technology Conference (QISTCon.PH 2025) from July 30 to August 1, 2025, in Mactan, Cebu. According to the Philippine Information Agency, the event drew 200 participants from around the world, with guest speakers from Taiwan, Singapore, India, Thailand, and Japan.

Co-organized by DOST-PCIEERD and the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines (QCSP), the conference was recognized as an official event under the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, with support from the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA). Sessions covered quantum hardware, cybersecurity, investment, and regional ecosystem development.

A 2-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) desktop quantum computer from SpinQ was unveiled at the conference, marking the first quantum computer to be demonstrated in the country. DOST-PCIEERD Director Enrico Paringit described the device as intended to stimulate interest among young Filipinos in quantum science and innovation.
