In late December 2025, the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS) announced its participation as coordinator or partner in five cross-border projects under the European Commission’s EuroQCI initiative. According to the PCSS announcement, the projects will establish terrestrial quantum key distribution (QKD) links connecting Poland with Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria.
Designated QCI-AT-CZ-PL, QCI-SK-CZ-PL, QUANT-GPLCZ, QCI.dk Cross Border, and PIONIER-Q-SAT, the five initiatives are implemented by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) with national co-funding from Poland’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Project work was scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026 and continue until 2029. PCSS reported the total budget allocated across all projects at EUR 16 million.
Under the PIONIER-Q-SAT project, Poland’s first mobile ground station for satellite QKD will be built, enabling communication with the Eagle-1 satellite. Partners include NASK, the Military University of Technology, Creotech Instruments, and several universities. The foundation for these projects is Poland’s PIONIER-Q network, which reached full operational status in the third quarter of 2024 and spans 1,770 kilometers of optical fiber connecting key Polish cities.
