Eight Polish scientific institutions signed a letter of intent in late January 2021 establishing joint cooperation on quantum research and development. The signatories included the University of Warsaw, the University of Gdańsk, the Centre for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Jagiellonian University, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Wrocław University of Technology, and the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as reported by the Jagiellonian University.
Prof. Marek Żukowski of the University of Gdańsk described the signing as a chance to form a strong national alliance capable of playing a significant role in European quantum research. Researchers expressed hopes that the consortium would facilitate coordination of national-level work and contacts with business partners, and would present a unified voice in dialogue with state institutions.
Participants called for the establishment of a long-term national quantum research program. Joint activities were open to other Polish entities conducting quantum R&D, including those associated with the National Centre for Quantum Informatics at the University of Gdańsk and the National Laboratory of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics.
