Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) launched the Quantum Engineering Programme (QEP) in 2018 with an initial investment of S$25 million (USD 18.5 million). The programme, hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), was established to translate quantum science and technologies into engineering devices and capabilities that meet industry needs, according to the National Quantum Office.

QEP was designed to build a competitive quantum engineering research community in Singapore, with a focus on translational research in areas such as cybersecurity, global navigation systems, sensing technologies, and diagnostic imaging. Seven initial research and development projects were funded under the programme’s first phase, covering superconducting nanowire single photon detectors, quantum key distribution, and quantum foundry capabilities.

A steering committee led by the Chief Executive Officer of NRF and Singapore’s Chief Defence Scientist oversaw the programme. QEP supported projects led from any of Singapore’s institutes of higher learning and research institutions, with deliverables in industry engagement, talent development, and intellectual property outcomes.
