The National Quantum Communication Infrastructure in Sweden (NQCIS) project launched on January 1, 2023, with SEK 100 million (approximately USD 9.6 million) in funding over 30 months. According to the project website, NQCIS falls under the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative and is funded by the EU’s Digital Europe Programme, Vinnova, and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology.

A consortium of Swedish industry and academic partners formed the project. KTH Royal Institute of Technology serves as coordinator, with Chalmers University of Technology, Linköping University, and Stockholm University also participating alongside companies Ericsson AB, Quantum Scopes AB, and quCertify AB. The project’s objective is to test and deploy quantum key distribution (QKD) systems tailored to Sweden’s needs, covering metropolitan, long-distance, and terrestrial-to-satellite links.

NQCIS includes a central research facility at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, open to users from academia and industry and supporting training and education in quantum communications.
