On December 12, 2024, the Swedish government presented its research and innovation bill for 2025 to 2028, titled “Forskning och innovation för framtid, nyfikenhet och nytta” (Research and Innovation for the Future, Curiosity, and Benefit). According to the government’s press release, the bill was described as the largest research and innovation proposition ever presented by a Swedish government.
RISE, the Research Institutes of Sweden, reported that the bill highlighted quantum technology as a strategic research area. NordForsk noted that funding had been earmarked for this purpose: SEK 50 million in 2027, rising to SEK 100 million (approximately USD 9 million) in 2028. The bill’s quantum technology designation followed the May 2024 government mandate to the Swedish Research Council to develop a national quantum strategy.
Education Minister Johan Pehrson presented the bill, which emphasized excellence in research, international collaboration, and competitiveness across high-technology sectors. A new instrument for “excellence centers” was announced, and quantum was identified as one of the domains to be addressed through these clusters.
