On April 8, 2022, the United States and Sweden signed a Joint Statement on Cooperation in Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST) at the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research in Stockholm. According to the U.S. National Quantum Coordination Office, U.S. Ambassador Erik Ramanathan signed for the United States, while Swedish Minister for Education Anna Ekström signed for Sweden.
The joint statement outlined shared commitments to engage in good-faith cooperation in QIST, build a trusted global market and supply chain, and support the development of a next-generation quantum workforce including through personnel exchanges. Samuel Engblom, State Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research, called the statement “another opportunity for close collaboration between researchers in our two countries.”
Sweden was among eleven countries to sign such bilateral quantum cooperation statements with the United States. The agreement built on a 2006 U.S.-Sweden Science and Technology Agreement that had produced several implementing arrangements over the years.
