The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) announced a jubilee donation of SEK 1.6 billion (approximately USD 190 million) for research into artificial intelligence and quantum technology, marking the foundation’s 100th anniversary. The announcement included SEK 600 million to establish the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), with participating universities and Swedish companies contributing additional funds to bring the center’s total resources to nearly SEK 1 billion.

WACQT, to be coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology, would also involve KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University. The center’s stated goal was to build a 100-qubit superconducting quantum computer over a ten-year period, while establishing long-term expertise in quantum computing, simulation, communication, and sensing across Swedish academia and industry. Peter Wallenberg Jr, chair of the foundation, said the donation continued a tradition of funding basic research “to drive the development of innovative technology that will contribute to Sweden’s long-term progress.”
