On October 14, 2021, the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative (CERN QTI) published its first strategic roadmap, defining the medium- and long-term quantum research program at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The CERN press release detailed the roadmap’s goals, governing structure, and the composition of an international advisory board nominated by the 23 CERN member states.

CERN QTI is organized around four research areas: quantum computing and algorithms, quantum theory and simulation, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum communication and networks. Through the initiative, CERN is making available its enabling technologies, including quantum state sensors and time synchronization protocols, to accelerate quantum technology development.

Professor Joachim Mnich, CERN Director for Research and Computing, described CERN as uniquely positioned to act as a neutral platform between member states and to advance quantum technologies for high-energy physics and beyond. A year after its launch, CERN QTI had already established multiple collaborations and projects with leading academic and research centers.
