Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, in partnership with Ukrainian IT company SoftServe, launched a bachelor’s degree program titled “Quantum Computers and Quantum Programming” in September 2020. According to Prof. Volodymyr Tkachuk, the program’s curator and head of the Department of Theoretical Physics, the department had conducted scientific research in quantum information for more than 20 years and expanded earlier master’s-level coursework into full bachelor’s and master’s programs opening in 2020.
The program covers physics, mathematics, and computer science, with students gaining practical programming experience on IBM, Google, and Rigetti quantum computers. SoftServe’s R&D department, which had been researching practical quantum computing solutions for business clients, co-developed the curriculum. A corresponding master’s program was set to launch in September 2021.
As described by the European Business Association, the program represented the first dedicated quantum computing degree offering at a Ukrainian university. Prof. Khrystyna Gnatenko of the Faculty of Physics served as the program’s guarantor from February 2020.
