The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) joined the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) as a new member on December 3, 2024, according to an announcement by AIMS Rwanda. The membership agreement was signed on that date. AIMS is the parent organization of Quantum Leap Africa (QLA), the Kigali-based quantum and data science research centre.

OQI is a multilateral governance initiative hosted at CERN during its pilot phase from 2024 to 2026. Born at the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA) and supported by UBS, the institute promotes global and inclusive access to quantum computing and the development of applications aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It brings together academia, diplomacy, private sector, and philanthropy stakeholders.

Dr. Prince Osei, Lead Scientist and Director of QLA, said the membership would position AIMS to lead the continent in applying quantum technology to pressing challenges. AIMS’s participation would allow it to contribute to OQI’s objectives of developing quantum computing applications in areas such as healthcare, energy, and transportation. Other African members of OQI include the African Quantum Consortium, based in Zimbabwe.
