On March 30, 2023, EU research and innovation liaison offices from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden organized a high-level event titled “Northern Prospects of Quantum” in Brussels. According to the Estonian Research Council, the event drew 35 experts from Nordic and Baltic countries, who presented on regional developments in quantum technology.
Representatives from the University of Tartu presented on Estonia’s participation in the NordIQuEst quantum computing infrastructure project. Estonian participants called for a national quantum technology initiative. Veiko Palge of the University of Tartu expressed hope that the event would help catalyze an Estonian quantum technology strategy focused on quantum software competence.
According to the event programme, sessions covered societal aspects of quantum technologies, EU defense innovation in quantum, Nordic-Baltic quantum agendas, and policy implications. Speakers included European Commission officials, national research agency leaders, and industry representatives from across the region.
